           BetweenClareandthewindowwasthetableatwhichhiscompanionssat,theirmunchingprofilesrisingsharpagainstthepanes;whiletothesidewasthemilk-housedoor,throughwhichwerevisibletherectangularleadsinrows,fulltothebrimwiththemorning’smilk.Atthefurtherendthegreatchurncouldbeseenrevolving,anditsslip-sloppingheardthemovingpowerbeingdiscerniblethroughthewindowintheformofaspiritlesshorsewalkinginacircleanddrivenbyaboy.

           ForseveraldaysafterTess’sarrivalClare,sittingabstractedlyreadingfromsomebook,periodical,orpieceofmusicjustcomebypost,hardlynoticedthatshewaspresentattable.Shetalkedsolittle,andtheothermaidstalkedsomuch,thatthebabbledidnotstrikehimaspossessinganewnote,andhewaseverinthehabitofneglectingtheparticularsofanoutwardsceneforthegeneralimpression.Oneday,however,whenhehadbeenconningoneofhismusic-scores,andbyforceofimaginationwashearingthetuneinhishead,helapsedintolistlessness,andthemusic-sheetrolledtothehearth.Helookedatthefireoflogs,withitsoneflamepirouettingonthetopinadyingdanceafterthebreakfast-cookingandboiling,anditseemedtojigtohisinwardtune;alsoatthetwochimneycrooksdanglingdownfromthecotterelorcross-bar,plumedwithsootwhichquiveredtothesamemelody;alsoatthehalf-emptykettlewhininganaccompaniment.
