Earlyassociationwithcountrysolitudeshadbredinhimanunconquerable,andalmostunreasonable,aversiontomoderntownlife,andshuthimoutfromsuchsuccessashemighthaveaspiredtobyfollowingamundanecallingintheimpracticabilityofthespiritualone.Butsomethinghadtobedone;hehadwastedmanyvaluableyears;andhavinganacquaintancewhowasstartingonathrivinglifeasaColonialfarmer,itoccurredtoAngelthatthismightbealeadintherightdirection.Farming,eitherintheColonies,America,orathome—farming,atanyrate,afterbecomingwellqualifiedforthebusinessbyacarefulapprenticeship—thatwasavocationwhichwouldprobablyaffordanindependencewithoutthesacrificeofwhathevaluedevenmorethanacompetency—intellectualliberty.
