           Mrs.Gummidgeretiredwiththesewords,andbetookherselftobed.Whenshewasgone,Mr.Peggotty,whohadnotexhibitedatraceofanyfeelingbuttheprofoundestsympathy,lookedrounduponus,andnoddinghisheadwithalivelyexpressionofthatsentimentstillanimatinghisface,saidinawhisper:

           ‘She’sbeenthinkingoftheold‘un!’

           IdidnotquiteunderstandwhatoldoneMrs.Gummidgewassupposedtohavefixedhermindupon,untilPeggotty,onseeingmetobed,explainedthatitwasthelateMr.Gummidge;andthatherbrotheralwaystookthatforareceivedtruthonsuchoccasions,andthatitalwayshadamovingeffectuponhim.Sometimeafterhewasinhishammockthatnight,IheardhimmyselfrepeattoHam,‘Poorthing!She’sbeenthinkingoftheold‘un!’AndwheneverMrs.
