Themostrackingpangssucceeded:agrindinginthebones,deadlynausea,andahorrorofthespiritthatcannotbeexceededatthehourofbirthordeath. Thentheseagoniesbeganswiftlytosubside,andIcametomyselfasifoutofagreatsickness. Therewassomethingstrangeinmysensations,somethingindescribablynewand,fromitsverynovelty,incrediblysweet. Ifeltyounger,lighter,happierinbody;withinIwasconsciousofaheadyrecklessness,acurrentofdisorderedsensualimagesrunninglikeamill-raceinmyfancy,asolutionofthebondsofobligation,anunknownbutnotaninnocentfreedomofthesoul. Iknewmyself,atthefirstbreathofthisnewlife,tobemorewicked,tenfoldmorewicked,soldaslavetomyoriginalevil;andthethought,inthatmoment,bracedanddelightedmelikewine. Istretchedoutmyhands,exultinginthefreshnessofthesesensations;andintheact,IwassuddenlyawarethatIhadlostinstature.
Therewasnomirror,atthatdate,inmyroom; thatwhichstandsbesidemeasIwrite,wasbroughttherelateronandfortheverypurposeofthesetransformations.
