           “Yes,”saidhe,“Irecognisehim. IamsorrytosaythatthisisSirDanversCarew.” 

           “GoodGod,sir,”exclaimedtheofficer,“isitpossible?” Andthenextmomenthiseyelightedupwithprofessionalambition. “Thiswillmakeadealofnoise,”hesaid. “Andperhapsyoucanhelpustotheman.” Andhebrieflynarratedwhatthemaidhadseen,andshowedthebrokenstick. 

           Mr.UttersonhadalreadyquailedatthenameofHyde;butwhenthestickwaslaidbeforehim,hecoulddoubtnolonger; brokenandbatteredasitwas,herecogniseditforonethathehadhimselfpresentedmanyyearsbeforetoHenryJekyll. 

           “IsthisMr.Hydeapersonofsmallstature?”heinquired.
