Andthenallofasuddenhebrokeoutinagreatflameofanger,stampingwithhisfoot,brandishingthecane,andcarryingon(asthemaiddescribedit)likeamadman. Theoldgentlemantookastepback,withtheairofoneverymuchsurprisedandatriflehurt;andatthatMr.Hydebrokeoutofallboundsandclubbedhimtotheearth. Andnextmoment,withape-likefury,hewastramplinghisvictimunderfootandhailingdownastormofblows,underwhichtheboneswereaudiblyshatteredandthebodyjumpedupontheroadway. Atthehorrorofthesesightsandsounds,themaidfainted.

Itwastwoo’clockwhenshecametoherselfandcalledforthepolice.Themurdererwasgonelongago; buttherelayhisvictiminthemiddleofthelane,incrediblymangled. Thestickwithwhichthedeedhadbeendone,althoughitwasofsomerareandverytoughandheavywood,hadbrokeninthemiddleunderthestressofthisinsensatecruelty; andonesplinteredhalfhadrolledintheneighbouringgutter—theother,withoutdoubt,hadbeencarriedawaybythemurderer.
