DuringthefirstdinneratwhichsheentertainedtheCowperwoodsMrs.SimmsattemptedtodigintoAileen’sPhiladelphiahistory,askingifsheknewtheArthurLeighs,theTrevorDrakes,RobertaWilling,ortheMartynWalkers.Mrs.Simmsdidnotknowthemherself,butshehadheardMrs.Merrillspeakofthem,andthatwasenoughofahandlewherebytoswingthem.Aileen,quickonthedefense,readytoliemanfullyonherownbehalf,assuredherthatshehadknownthem,asindeedshehad—verycasually—andbeforetherumorwhichconnectedherwithCowperwoodhadbeenvoicedabroad.ThispleasedMrs.Simms.
