Ontheirreturn,thebuildingofthenewChicagomansioncreatedthenextinterestingdiversioninthelivesofAileenandCowperwood.BecauseofsomechateauxtheysawinFrancethatform,orratheramodificationofitassuggestedbyTaylorLord,wasadopted.Mr.Lordfiguredthatitwouldtakeallofayear,perhapsayearandahalf,todeliveritinperfectorder,buttimewasofnogreatimportanceinthisconnection.InthemeanwhiletheycouldstrengthentheirsocialconnectionsandprepareforthatinterestingdaywhentheyshouldbeoftheChicagoelite.
Therewere,atthistime,severalelementsinChicago—thosewho,havinggrownsuddenlyrichfromdullpoverty,couldnotsoeasilyforgetthevillagechurchandthevillagesocialstandards;thosewho,havinginheritedwealth,ormigratedfromtheEastwherewealthwasold,understoodmoreofthesavoirfaireofthegame;andthosewho,beingnewlybornintowealthandseeingthedrifttowardasmarterAmericanlife,werebeginningtowishtheymightshineinit—theselasttheveryyoungpeople.
