Bynowalso,Cowperwoodhadinvestedaboutonehundredthousanddollarsinhisgas-companyspeculations,andhewasjubilantoverhisprospects;thefranchisesweregoodfortwentyyears.Bythattimehewouldbenearlysixty,andhewouldprobablyhavebought,combinedwith,orsoldouttotheoldercompaniesatagreatprofit.ThefutureofChicagowasallinhisfavor.Hedecidedtoinvestasmuchasthirtythousanddollarsinpictures,ifhecouldfindtherightones,andtohaveAileen’sportraitpaintedwhileshewasstillsobeautiful.Thismatterofartwasagainbeginningtointeresthimimmensely.Addisonhadfourorfivegoodpictures—aRousseau,aGreuze,aWouverman,andoneLawrence—pickedupHeavenknowswhere.Ahotel-manbythenameofCollard,adry-goodsandreal-estatemerchant,wassaidtohaveaverystrikingcollection.
