Thisman,incompanywiththeantagonisticfinancialelementandthenewspapers,constituted,asregardsCowperwood’spublic-service-commissionscheme,atriumvirateofdifficultiesnoteasytoovercome.Thenewspapers,induetime,catchingwindofthetruepurportoftheplan,ranscreamingtotheirreaderswiththehorribleintelligence.IntheofficesofSchryhart,Arneel,Hand,andMerrill,aswellasinothercentersoffinance,therewasconsiderablepuzzlingoverthesituation,andthenashrewd,intelligentdeductionwasmade.
