"Letmetellyoualittlesomethingaboutmylife,willyou?Itwon’ttakelong.IwasborninPhiladelphia.Myfamilyhadalwaysbelongedthere.Ihavebeeninthebankingandstreet-railwaybusinessallmylife.MyfirstwifewasaPresbyteriangirl,religious,conventional.ShewasolderthanIbysixorsevenyears.Iwashappyforawhile—fiveorsixyears.Wehadtwochildren—bothstillliving.ThenImetmypresentwife.Shewasyoungerthanmyself—atleasttenyears,andverygood-looking.Shewasinsomerespectsmoreintelligentthanmyfirstwife—atleastlessconventional,moregenerous,Ithought.Ifellinlovewithher,andwhenIeventuallyleftPhiladelphiaIgotadivorceandmarriedher.Iwasgreatlyinlovewithheratthetime.Ithoughtshewasanidealmateforme,andIstillthinkshehasmanyqualitieswhichmakeherattractive.Butmyownidealsinregardtowomenhaveallthetimebeenslowlychanging.Ihavecometosee,throughvariousexperiments,thatsheisnottheidealwomanformeatall.Shedoesnotunderstandme.Idon’tpretendtounderstandmyself,butithasoccurredtomethattheremightbeawomansomewherewhowouldunderstandmebetterthanIunderstandmyself,whowouldseethethingsthatIdon’tseeaboutmyself,andwouldlikeme,anyhow.ImightaswelltellyouthatIhavebeenaloverofwomenalways.Thereisjustoneidealthinginthisworldtome,andthatisthewomanthatIwouldliketohave.
