Thebeautyofthesestrangethings,thepatientlaboringsofinspiredsoulsofvarioustimesandplaces,movedhim,onoccasion,toagentleawe.Ofallindividualsherespected,indeedrevered,thesincereartist.Existencewasamystery,butthesesoulswhosetthemselvestoquiettasksofbeautyhadcaughtsomethingofwhichhewasdimlyconscious.Lifehadtouchedthemwithavision,theirheartsandsoulswereattunedtosweetharmoniesofwhichthecommonworldknewnothing.Sometimes,whenhewaswearyafterastrenuousday,hewouldenter—lateinthenight—hisnowsilentgallery,andturningonthelightssothatthewholesweetroomstoodrevealed,hewouldseathimselfbeforesometreasure,reflectingonthenature,themood,thetime,andthemanthathadproducedit.SometimesitwouldbeoneofRembrandt’smelancholyheads—thesad"PortraitofaRabbi"—orthesweetintrospectionofaRousseaustream.AsolemnDutchhousewife,renderedwiththeboldfidelityandresonantenameledsurfacesofaHalsorthecoldeleganceofanIngres,commandedhisutmostenthusiasm.Sohewouldsitandwonderatthevisionandskilloftheoriginaldreamer,exclaimingattimes:"Amarvel!Amarvel!"
