A Matter of Tunnels
Becauseofthishewasnaturallyinterestedtoobserveoneday,inthecourseofhisperegrinations,thatthereexistedintwoplacesundertheChicagoRiver—inthefirstplaceatLaSalleStreet,runningnorthandsouth,andinthesecondatWashingtonStreet,runningeastandwest—twonowsoggyandrat-infestedtunnelswhichwereneverusedbyanybody—dark,dank,drippingaffairsonlyvaguelylightedwithoil-lamp,andoozingwithwater.Uponinvestigationhelearnedthattheyhadbeenbuiltyearsbeforetoaccommodatethissametideofwagontraffic,whichnowcongestedatthebridges,andwhicheventhenhadbeenrapidlyrising.Beingforcedtopayatollintimetowhichaslighttollincash,exactedfortheprivilegeofusingatunnel,hadseemedtotheinvestorsandpublicinfinitelytobepreferred,thistraffichadbeenofferedthisopportunityofavoidingthedelay.However,likemanyanotherhandsomecommercialschemeonpaperorbubblinginthehumanbrain,theplandidnotworkexactly.Thesetunnelsmighthaveprovedprofitableiftheyhadbeenproperlybuiltwithlong,low-per-cent.grades,wideroadways,andasufficiencyoflightandair;but,asamatteroffact,theyhadnotbeenjudiciouslyadaptedtopublicconvenience.NormanSchryhart’sfatherhadbeenaninvestorinthesetunnels,andAnsonMerrill.
