Mr.Rochestercontinuedblindthefirsttwoyearsofourunion;perhapsitwasthatcircumstancethatdrewussoverynear—thatknitussoveryclose:forIwasthenhisvision,asIamstillhisrighthand. Literally,Iwas(whatheoftencalledme)theappleofhiseye. Hesawnature—hesawbooksthroughme;andneverdidIwearyofgazingforhisbehalf,andofputtingintowordstheeffectoffield,tree,town,river,cloud,sunbeam—ofthelandscapebeforeus;oftheweatherroundus—andimpressingbysoundonhisearwhatlightcouldnolongerstamponhiseye. NeverdidIwearyofreadingtohim;neverdidIwearyofconductinghimwherehewishedtogo:ofdoingforhimwhathewishedtobedone. Andtherewasapleasureinmyservices,mostfull,mostexquisite,eventhoughsad—becauseheclaimedtheseserviceswithoutpainfulshameordampinghumiliation.
