Ilookedroundtheconvent-likegarden,andthenupatthehouse—alargebuilding,halfofwhichseemedgreyandold,theotherhalfquitenew. Thenewpart,containingtheschoolroomanddormitory,waslitbymullionedandlatticedwindows,whichgaveitachurch-likeaspect;astonetabletoverthedoorborethisinscription:-
"LowoodInstitution.—ThisportionwasrebuiltA.D.—byNaomiBrocklehurst,ofBrocklehurstHall,inthiscounty."

Ireadthesewordsoverandoveragain:Ifeltthatanexplanationbelongedtothem,andwasunablefullytopenetratetheirimport. Iwasstillponderingthesignificationof"Institution,"andendeavouringtomakeoutaconnectionbetweenthefirstwordsandtheverseofScripture,whenthesoundofacoughclosebehindmemademeturnmyhead. Isawagirlsittingonastonebenchnear;shewasbentoverabook,ontheperusalofwhichsheseemedintent:fromwhereIstoodIcouldseethetitle—itwas"Rasselas;"anamethatstruckmeasstrange,andconsequentlyattractive.
