           Myclotheshunglooseonme;forIwasmuchwasted,butIcovereddeficiencieswithashawl,andoncemore,cleanandrespectablelookingnospeckofthedirt,notraceofthedisorderIsohated,andwhichseemedsotodegrademe,leftIcreptdownastonestaircasewiththeaidofthebanisters,toanarrowlowpassage,andfoundmywaypresentlytothekitchen.

           "Didyouevergoa-beggingaforeyoucamehere?" 

           Iwasindignantforamoment;butrememberingthatangerwasoutofthequestion,andthatIhadindeedappearedasabeggartoher,Iansweredquietly,butstillnotwithoutacertainmarkedfirmness 

           "Youaremistakeninsupposingmeabeggar.Iamnobeggar;anymorethanyourselforyouryoungladies."
