"Theservantssleepsofaroff,youknow,Miss,theywouldnotbelikelytohear.Mrs.Fairfax’sroomandyoursarethenearesttomaster’s;butMrs.Fairfaxsaidsheheardnothing:whenpeoplegetelderly,theyoftensleepheavy." Shepaused,andthenadded,withasortofassumedindifference,butstillinamarkedandsignificanttone—"Butyouareyoung,Miss;andIshouldsayalightsleeper:perhapsyoumayhaveheardanoise?"

Shetookanewneedlefulofthread,waxeditcarefully,threadedherneedlewithasteadyhand,andthenobserved,withperfectcomposure—
