           Oneevening,whenhetookthepainstogotoMiddlemarchonpurposetohaveachatwithLydgateasofold,henoticedinhimanairofexcitedeffortquiteunlikehisusualeasywayofkeepingsilenceorbreakingitwithabruptenergywheneverhehadanythingtosay.Lydgatetalkedpersistentlywhentheywereinhiswork-room,puttingargumentsforandagainsttheprobabilityofcertainbiologicalviews;buthehadnoneofthosedefinitethingstosayortoshowwhichgivethewaymarksofapatientuninterruptedpursuit,suchasheusedhimselftoinsiston,sayingthat"theremustbeasystoleanddiastoleinallinquiry,"andthat"aman’smindmustbecontinuallyexpandingandshrinkingbetweenthewholehumanhorizonandthehorizonofanobject-glass."Thateveningheseemedtobetalkingwidelyforthesakeofresistinganypersonalbearing;andbeforelongtheywentintothedrawingroom,whereLydgate,havingaskedRosamondtogivethemmusic,sankbackinhischairinsilence,butwithastrangelightinhiseyes."Hemayhavebeentakinganopiate,"wasathoughtthatcrossedMr.Farebrother’smind—"tic-douloureuxperhapsormedicalworries."
