ToconvinceCarpofhismistake,sothathewouldhavetoeathisownwordswithagooddealofindigestion,wouldbeanagreeableaccidentoftriumphantauthorship,whichtheprospectoflivingtofutureagesonearthandtoalleternityinheavencouldnotexcludefromcontemplation.Since,thus,theprevisionofhisownunendingblisscouldnotnullifythebittersavorsofirritatedjealousyandvindictiveness,itisthelesssurprisingthattheprobabilityofatransientearthlyblissforotherpersons,whenhehimselfshouldhaveenteredintoglory,hadnotapotentlysweeteningeffect.Ifthetruthshouldbethatsomeunderminingdiseasewasatworkwithinhim,theremightbelargeopportunityforsomepeopletobethehappierwhenhewasgone;andifoneofthosepeopleshouldbeWillLadislaw,Mr.Casaubonobjectedsostronglythatitseemedasiftheannoyancewouldmakepartofhisdisembodiedexistence.
Thisisaverybareandthereforeaveryincompletewayofputtingthecase.Thehumansoulmovesinmanychannels,andMr.Casaubon,weknow,hadasenseofrectitudeandanhonorableprideinsatisfyingtherequirementsofhonor,whichcompelledhimtofindotherreasonsforhisconductthanthoseofjealousyandvindictiveness.ThewayinwhichMr.Casaubonputthecasewasthis:—"InmarryingDorotheaBrookeIhadtocareforherwell-beingincaseofmydeath.
