WillLadislawonhissidefeltthathisdislikewasflourishingattheexpenseofhisgratitude,andspentmuchinwarddiscourseinjustifyingthedislike.Casaubonhatedhim—heknewthatverywell;onhisfirstentrancehecoulddiscernabitternessinthemouthandavenomintheglancewhichwouldalmostjustifydeclaringwarinspiteofpastbenefits.
