Withsomeendowmentofstupidityandconceit,shemighthavethoughtthataChristianyoungladyoffortuneshouldfindheridealoflifeinvillagecharities,patronageofthehumblerclergy,theperusalof"FemaleScriptureCharacters,"unfoldingtheprivateexperienceofSaraundertheOldDispensation,andDorcasundertheNew,andthecareofhersouloverherembroideryinherownboudoir—withabackgroundofprospectivemarriagetoamanwho,iflessstrictthanherself,asbeinginvolvedinaffairsreligiouslyinexplicable,mightbeprayedforandseasonablyexhorted.FromsuchcontentmentpoorDorotheawasshutout.Theintensityofherreligiousdisposition,thecoercionitexercisedoverherlife,wasbutoneaspectofanaturealtogetherardent,theoretic,andintellectuallyconsequent:andwithsuchanaturestrugglinginthebandsofanarrowteaching,hemmedinbyasociallifewhichseemednothingbutalabyrinthofpettycourses,awalled-inmazeofsmallpathsthatlednowhither,theoutcomewassuretostrikeothersasatonceexaggerationandinconsistency.Thethingwhichseemedtoherbest,shewantedtojustifybythecompletestknowledge;andnottoliveinapretendedadmissionofruleswhichwereneveractedon.Intothissoul-hungerasyetallheryouthfulpassionwaspoured;theunionwhichattractedherwasonethatwoulddeliverherfromhergirlishsubjectiontoherownignorance,andgiveherthefreedomofvoluntarysubmissiontoaguidewhowouldtakeheralongthegrandestpath.
