           VincyhimselfhadexpensiveMiddlemarchhabitsspentmoneyoncoursing,onhiscellar,andondinner-giving,whilemammahadthoserunningaccountswithtradespeople,whichgiveacheerfulsenseofgettingeverythingonewantswithoutanyquestionofpayment.Butitwasinthenatureoffathers,Fredknew,tobullyoneaboutexpenses:therewasalwaysalittlestormoverhisextravaganceifhehadtodiscloseadebt,andFreddislikedbadweatherwithindoors.Hewastoofilialtobedisrespectfultohisfather,andheborethethunderwiththecertaintythatitwastransient;butinthemeantimeitwasdisagreeabletoseehismothercry,andalsotobeobligedtolooksulkyinsteadofhavingfun;forFredwassogood-temperedthatifhelookedglumunderscolding,itwaschieflyforpropriety’ssake.Theeasiercourseplainly,wastorenewthebillwithafriend’ssignature.Whynot?Withthesuperfluoussecuritiesofhopeathiscommand,therewasnoreasonwhyheshouldnothaveincreasedotherpeople’sliabilitiestoanyextent,butforthefactthatmenwhosenamesweregoodforanythingwereusuallypessimists,indisposedtobelievethattheuniversalorderofthingswouldnecessarilybeagreeabletoanagreeableyounggentleman.

           Withafavortoaskwereviewourlistoffriends,dojusticetotheirmoreamiablequalities,forgivetheirlittleoffenses,andconcerningeachinturn,trytoarriveattheconclusionthathewillbeeagertoobligeus,ourowneagernesstobeobligedbeingascommunicableasotherwarmth.
