           Willburstinhereandtherewithardentwordsofpraise,markingoutparticularmeritsinhisfriend’swork;andDorotheafeltthatshewasgettingquitenewnotionsastothesignificanceofMadonnasseatedunderinexplicablecanopiedthroneswiththesimplecountryasabackground,andofsaintswitharchitecturalmodelsintheirhands,orknivesaccidentallywedgedintheirskulls.Somethingswhichhadseemedmonstroustoherweregatheringintelligibilityandevenanaturalmeaning:butallthiswasapparentlyabranchofknowledgeinwhichMr.Casaubonhadnotinterestedhimself.

           Naumann’spronunciationofthevowelseemedtostretchthewordsatirically.Willdidnothalflikeit,butmanagedtolaugh:andMr.Casaubon,whilehefeltsomedisgustattheartist’sGermanaccent,begantoentertainalittlerespectforhisjudiciousseverity.
