Everyonenowsatdown,Mr.Bulstrodepresiding,paleandself-restrainedasusual.Mr.Thesiger,amoderateevangelical,wishedfortheappointmentofhisfriendMr.Tyke,azealousableman,who,officiatingatachapelofease,hadnotacureofsoulstooextensivetoleavehimampletimeforthenewduty.Itwasdesirablethatchaplainciesofthiskindshouldbeenteredonwithaferventintention:theywerepeculiaropportunitiesforspiritualinfluence;andwhileitwasgoodthatasalaryshouldbeallotted,therewasthemoreneedforscrupulouswatchinglesttheofficeshouldbepervertedintoamerequestionofsalary.Mr.Thesiger’smannerhadsomuchquietproprietythatobjectorscouldonlysimmerinsilence.
Mr.Brookebelievedthateverybodymeantwellinthematter.HehadnothimselfattendedtotheaffairsoftheInfirmary,thoughhehadastronginterestinwhateverwasforthebenefitofMiddlemarch,andwasmosthappytomeetthegentlemenpresentonanypublicquestion—"anypublicquestion,youknow,"Mr.Brookerepeated,withhisnodofperfectunderstanding."Iamagooddealoccupiedasamagistrate,andinthecollectionofdocumentaryevidence,butIregardmytimeasbeingatthedisposalofthepublic—and,inshort,myfriendshaveconvincedmethatachaplainwithasalary—asalary,youknow—isaverygoodthing,andIamhappytobeabletocomehereandvotefortheappointmentofMr.
