Mr.Farebrothercontendedontheoryforthedesirabilityofallgames,andsaidthatEnglishmen’switwasstagnantforwantofthem;butLydgatefeltcertainthathewouldhaveplayedverymuchlessbutforthemoney.Therewasabilliard-roomattheGreenDragon,whichsomeanxiousmothersandwivesregardedasthechieftemptationinMiddlemarch.TheVicarwasafirst-ratebilliard-player,andthoughhedidnotfrequenttheGreenDragon,therewerereportsthathehadsometimesbeenthereinthedaytimeandhadwonmoney.Andastothechaplaincy,hedidnotpretendthathecaredforit,exceptforthesakeofthefortypounds.LydgatewasnoPuritan,buthedidnotcareforplay,andwinningmoneyatithadalwaysseemedameannesstohim;besides,hehadanidealoflifewhichmadethissubservienceofconducttothegainingofsmallsumsthoroughlyhatefultohim.Hithertoinhisownlifehiswantshadbeensuppliedwithoutanytroubletohimself,andhisfirstimpulsewasalwaystobeliberalwithhalf-crownsasmattersofnoimportancetoagentleman;ithadneveroccurredtohimtodeviseaplanforgettinghalf-crowns.Hehadalwaysknowninageneralwaythathewasnotrich,buthehadneverfeltpoor,andhehadnopowerofimaginingthepartwhichthewantofmoneyplaysindeterminingtheactionsofmen.Moneyhadneverbeenamotivetohim.Hencehewasnotreadytoframeexcusesforthisdeliberatepursuitofsmallgains.
