Hisschoolstudieshadnotmuchmodifiedthatopinion,forthoughhe"did"hisclassicsandmathematics,hewasnotpre-eminentinthem.Itwassaidofhim,thatLydgatecoulddoanythingheliked,buthehadcertainlynotyetlikedtodoanythingremarkable.Hewasavigorousanimalwithareadyunderstanding,butnosparkhadyetkindledinhimanintellectualpassion;knowledgeseemedtohimaverysuperficialaffair,easilymastered:judgingfromtheconversationofhiselders,hehadapparentlygotalreadymorethanwasnecessaryformaturelife.Probablythiswasnotanexceptionalresultofexpensiveteachingatthatperiodofshort-waistedcoats,andotherfashionswhichhavenotyetrecurred.But,onevacation,awetdaysenthimtothesmallhomelibrarytohuntoncemoreforabookwhichmighthavesomefreshnessforhim:invain!unless,indeed,hetookdownadustyrowofvolumeswithgray-paperbacksanddingylabels—thevolumesofanoldCyclopaediawhichhehadneverdisturbed.Itwouldatleastbeanoveltytodisturbthem.Theywereonthehighestshelf,andhestoodonachairtogetthemdown.Butheopenedthevolumewhichhefirsttookfromtheshelf:somehow,oneisapttoreadinamakeshiftattitude,justwhereitmightseeminconvenienttodoso.ThepageheopenedonwasundertheheadofAnatomy,andthefirstpassagethatdrewhiseyeswasonthevalvesoftheheart.
