           Thesharplittlewoman’sconsciencewassomewhattroubledintheadjustmentoftheseopposing"bests,"andofhergriefsandsatisfactionsunderlateevents,whichwerelikelytohumblethosewhoneededhumbling,butalsotofallheavilyonheroldfriendwhosefaultsshewouldhavepreferredseeingonabackgroundofprosperity.

           PoorMrs.Bulstrode,meanwhile,hadbeennofurthershakenbytheoncomingtreadofcalamitythaninthebusierstirringofthatsecretuneasinesswhichhadalwaysbeenpresentinhersincethelastvisitofRafflestoTheShrubs.ThatthehatefulmanhadcomeilltoStoneCourt,andthatherhusbandhadchosentoremainthereandwatchoverhim,sheallowedtobeexplainedbythefactthatRaffleshadbeenemployedandaidedinearlier-days,andthatthismadeatieofbenevolencetowardshiminhisdegradedhelplessness;andshehadbeensincetheninnocentlycheeredbyherhusband’smorehopefulspeechabouthisownhealthandabilitytocontinuehisattentiontobusiness.ThecalmwasdisturbedwhenLydgatehadbroughthimhomeillfromthemeeting,andinspiteofcomfortingassurancesduringthenextfewdays,shecriedinprivatefromtheconvictionthatherhusbandwasnotsufferingfrombodilyillnessmerely,butfromsomethingthatafflictedhismind.Hewouldnotallowhertoreadtohim,andscarcelytositwithhim,allegingnervoussusceptibilitytosoundsandmovements;yetshesuspectedthatinshuttinghimselfupinhisprivateroomhewantedtobebusywithhispapers.
