AmeetingwastobeheldintheTown-Hallonasanitaryquestionwhichhadrisenintopressingimportancebytheoccurrenceofacholeracaseinthetown.SincetheActofParliament,whichhadbeenhurriedlypassed,authorizingassessmentsforsanitarymeasures,therehadbeenaBoardforthesuperintendenceofsuchmeasuresappointedinMiddlemarch,andmuchcleansingandpreparationhadbeenconcurredinbyWhigsandTories.Thequestionnowwas,whetherapieceofgroundoutsidethetownshouldbesecuredasaburial-groundbymeansofassessmentorbyprivatesubscription.Themeetingwastobeopen,andalmosteverybodyofimportanceinthetownwasexpectedtobethere.
