           Lydgate,whohadthemuscularaptitudeforbilliards,andwasfondofthegame,hadonceortwiceintheearlydaysafterhisarrivalinMiddlemarchtakenhisturnwiththecueattheGreenDragon;butafterwardshehadnoleisureforthegame,andnoinclinationforthesocialitiesthere.Oneevening,however,hehadoccasiontoseekMr.Bambridgeatthatresort.Thehorsedealerhadengagedtogethimacustomerforhisremaininggoodhorse,forwhichLydgatehaddeterminedtosubstituteacheaphack,hopingbythisreductionofstyletogetperhapstwentypounds;andhecarednowforeverysmallsum,asahelptowardsfeedingthepatienceofhistradesmen.Torunuptothebilliard-room,ashewaspassing,wouldsavetime.

           Mr.Bambridgewasnotyetcome,batwouldbesuretoarriveby-and-by,saidhisfriendMr.Horrock;andLydgatestayed,playingagameforthesakeofpassingthetime.ThateveninghehadthepeculiarlightintheeyesandtheunusualvivacitywhichhadbeenoncenoticedinhimbyMr.Farebrother.Theexceptionalfactofhispresencewasmuchnoticedintheroom,wheretherewasagooddealofMiddlemarchcompany;andseverallookers-on,aswellassomeoftheplayers,werebettingwithanimation.Lydgatewasplayingwell,andfeltconfident;thebetsweredroppingroundhim,andwithaswiftglancingthoughtoftheprobablegainwhichmightdoublethesumhewassavingfromhishorse,hebegantobetonhisownplay,andwonagainandagain.Mr.Bambridgehadcomein,butLydgatedidnotnoticehim.
