TheOldOnesseemedtorealizethisfallingoffthemselves,andinmanycasesanticipatedthepolicyofConstantinetheGreatbytransplantingespeciallyfineblocksofancientcarvingfromtheirlandcity,justastheemperor,inasimilarageofdecline,strippedGreeceandAsiaoftheirfinestarttogivehisnewByzantinecapitalgreatersplendorsthanitsownpeoplecouldcreate. Thatthetransferofsculpturedblockshadnotbeenmoreextensivewasdoubtlessowingtothefactthatthelandcitywasnotatfirstwhollyabandoned. Bythetimetotalabandonmentdidoccur—anditsurelymusthaveoccurredbeforethepolarPleistocenewasfaradvanced—theOldOneshadperhapsbecomesatisfiedwiththeirdecadentart—orhadceasedtorecognizethesuperiormeritoftheoldercarvings. Atanyrate,theaeon-silentruinsaroundushadcertainlyundergonenowholesalesculpturaldenudation,thoughallthebestseparatestatues,likeothermovables,hadbeentakenaway.
Thedecadentcartouchesanddadoestellingthisstorywere,asIhavesaid,thelatestwecouldfindinourlimitedsearch.
