Theyoungmaturedswiftly,andreceivedaneducationevidentlybeyondanystandardwecanimagine. Theprevailingintellectualandaestheticlifewashighlyevolved,andproducedatenaciouslyenduringsetofcustomsandinstitutionswhichIshalldescribemorefullyinmycomingmonograph. Thesevariedslightlyaccordingtoseaorlandresidence,buthadthesamefoundationsandessentials.
Thoughable,likevegetables,toderivenourishmentfrominorganicsubstances,theyvastlypreferredorganicandespeciallyanimalfood. Theyateuncookedmarinelifeunderthesea,butcookedtheirviandsonland. Theyhuntedgameandraisedmeatherds—slaughteringwithsharpweaponswhoseoddmarksoncertainfossilbonesourexpeditionhadnoted. Theyresistedallordinarytemperaturesmarvelously,andintheirnaturalstatecouldliveinwaterdowntofreezing. WhenthegreatchillofthePleistocenedrewon,however—nearlyamillionyearsago—thelanddwellershadtoresorttospecialmeasures,includingartificialheating—untilatlastthedeadlycoldappearstohavedriventhembackintothesea. Fortheirprehistoricflightsthroughcosmicspace,legendsaid,theyabsorbedcertainchemicalsandbecamealmostindependentofeating,breathing,orheatconditions—butbythetimeofthegreatcoldtheyhadlosttrackofthemethod.
