Oneedificehewnfromthesolidrockseemedtogobackfortyorpossiblyevenfiftymillionyears—tothelowerEoceneorupperCretaceous—andcontainedbas-reliefsofanartistrysurpassinganythingelse,withonetremendousexception,thatweencountered. Thatwas,wehavesinceagreed,theoldestdomesticstructurewetraversed.
Wereitnotforthesupportofthoseflashlightssoontobemadepublic,IwouldrefrainfromtellingwhatIfoundandinferred,lestIbeconfinedasamadman. Ofcourse,theinfinitelyearlypartsofthepatchworktale—representingthepreterrestriallifeofthestar-headedbeingsonotherplanets,inothergalaxies,andinotheruniverses—canreadilybeinterpretedasthefantasticmythologyofthosebeingsthemselves;yetsuchpartssometimesinvolveddesignsanddiagramssouncannilyclosetothelatestfindingsofmathematicsandastrophysicsthatIscarcelyknowwhattothink. Naturally,noonesetofcarvingswhichweencounteredtoldmorethanafractionofanyconnectedstory,nordidweevenbegintocomeuponthevariousstagesofthatstoryintheirproperorder. Someofthevastroomswereindependentunitssofarastheirdesignswereconcerned,whilstinothercasesacontinuouschroniclewouldbecarriedthroughaseriesofroomsandcorridors.
