Beneaththeirstrictconventionalizationonecouldgrasptheminuteandaccurateobservationandgraphicskilloftheartists;andindeed,theveryconventionsthemselvesservedtosymbolizeandaccentuatetherealessenceorvitaldifferentiationofeveryobjectdelineated. Itisthisabnormalhistoric-mindednessoftheprimalrace—achancecircumstanceoperating,throughcoincidence,miraculouslyinourfavor—whichmadethecarvingssoawesomelyinformativetous,andwhichcausedustoplacetheirphotographyandtranscriptionaboveallotherconsiderations. Incertainroomsthedominantarrangementwasvariedbythepresenceofmaps,astronomicalcharts,andotherscientificdesignsofanenlargedscale—thesethingsgivinganaiveandterriblecorroborationtowhatwegatheredfromthepictorialfriezesanddadoes. Inhintingatwhatthewholerevealed,Icanonlyhopethatmyaccountwillnotarouseacuriositygreaterthansanecautiononthepartofthosewhobelievemeatall. Itwouldbetragicifanyweretobealluredtothatrealmofdeathandhorrorbytheverywarningmeanttodiscouragethem.
