Danforthwasagreatreaderofbizarrematerial,andhadtalkedagooddealofPoe. IwasinterestedmyselfbecauseoftheantarcticsceneofPoe’sonlylongstory-thedisturbingandenigmaticalArthurGordonPym. Onthebarrenshore,andontheloftyicebarrierinthebackground,myriadsofgrotesquepenguinssquawkedandflappedtheirfins,whilemanyfatsealswerevisibleonthewater,swimmingorsprawlingacrosslargecakesofslowlydriftingice.
Usingsmallboats,weeffectedadifficultlandingonRossIslandshortlyaftermidnightonthemorningofthe9th,carryingalineofcablefromeachoftheshipsandpreparingtounloadsuppliesbymeansofabreeches-buoyarrangement. OursensationsonfirsttreadingAntarcticsoilwerepoiguantandcomplex,eventhoughatthisparticularpointtheScottandShackletonexpeditionshadprecededus.
