Howtoaccountforsuchthingsinthisplacewasfranklybeyondme,andIfeltqueerlyhumbledasageologist. Igneousformationsoftenhavestrangeregularities—likethefamousGiants’CausewayinIreland—butthisstupendousrange,despiteLake’soriginalsuspicionofsmokingcones,wasaboveallelsenonvolcanicinevidentstructure.
Thecuriouscavemouths,nearwhichtheoddformationsseemedmostabundant,presentedanotheralbeitalesserpuzzlebecauseoftheirregularityofoutline. Theywere,asLake’sbulletinhadsaid,oftenapproximatelysquareorsemicircular;asifthenaturalorificeshadbeenshapedtogreatersymmetrybysomemagichand. Theirnumerousnessandwidedistributionwereremarkable,andsuggestedthatthewholeregionwashoneycombedwithtunnelsdissolvedoutoflimestonestrata. Suchglimpsesaswesecureddidnotextendfarwithinthecaverns,butwesawthattheywereapparentlyclearofstalactitesandstalagmites. Outside,thosepartsofthemountainslopesadjoiningtheaperturesseemedinvariablysmoothandregular;andDanforththoughtthattheslightcracksandpittingsoftheweatheringtendedtowardunusualpatterns.
