Ifthesculpturedmapsandpicturesinthatprehumancityhadtoldtruly,thesecrypticvioletmountainscouldnotbemuchlessthanthreehundredmilesaway;yetnonethelesssharplydidtheirdimelfinessenceappearabovethatremoteandsnowyrim,liketheserratededgeofamonstrousalienplanetabouttoriseintounaccustomedheavens. Theirheight,then,musthavebeentremendousbeyondallcomparison—carryingthemupintotenuousatmosphericstratapeopledonlybysuchgaseouswraithsasrashflyershavebarelylivedtowhisperofafterunexplainablefalls. Lookingatthem,Ithoughtnervouslyofcertainsculpturedhintsofwhatthegreatbygoneriverhadwasheddownintothecityfromtheiraccursedslopes—andwonderedhowmuchsenseandhowmuchfollyhadlaininthefearsofthoseOldOneswhocarvedthemsoreticently. IrecalledhowtheirnortherlyendmustcomenearthecoastatQueenMaryLand,whereevenatthatmomentSirDouglasMawson’sexpeditionwasdoubtlessworkinglessthanathousandmilesaway;andhopedthatnoevilfatewouldgiveSirDouglasandhismenaglimpseofwhatmightliebeyondtheprotectingcoastalrange. Suchthoughtsformedameasureofmyoverwroughtconditionatthetime—andDanforthseemedtobeevenworse.
