"Tekeli-li!Tekeli-li!" That,Imayadmit,isexactlywhatwethoughtweheardconveyedbythatsuddensoundbehindtheadvancingwhitemist—thatinsidiousmusicalpipingoverasingularlywiderange.
Wewereinfullflightbeforethreenotesorsyllableshadbeenuttered,thoughweknewthattheswiftnessoftheOldOneswouldenableanyscream-rousedandpursuingsurvivoroftheslaughtertoovertakeusinamomentifitreallywishedtodoso. Then,notingthatwewereactuallygainingonourpursuer,itoccurredtousthattheentitymightbewounded. Wecouldtakenochances,however,sinceitwasveryobviouslyapproachinginanswertoDanforth’sscream,ratherthaninflightfromanyotherentity.
