Wewondered,too,whetherthetraceofmountaintopsmokeatfirstsuspectedbypoorLake,aswellastheoddhazewehadourselvesperceivedaroundtherampart-crownedpeak,mightnotbecausedbythetortuous-channeledrisingofsomesuchvaporfromtheunfathomedregionsofearth’score.
Enteringthetunnel,wesawthatitsoutlinewas—atleastatthestart—aboutfifteenfeeteachway—sides,floor,andarchedroofcomposedoftheusualmegalithicmasonry. Thesidesweresparselydecoratedwithcartouchesofconventionaldesignsinalate,decadentstyle;andalltheconstructionandcarvingweremarvelouslywell-preserved. Thefloorwasquiteclear,exceptforaslightdetritusbearingoutgoingpenguintracksandtheinwardtracksoftheseothers. Thefartheroneadvanced,thewarmeritbecame;sothatweweresoonunbuttoningourheavygarments. Wewonderedwhethertherewereanyactuallyigneousmanifestationsbelow,andwhetherthewatersofthatsunlessseawerehot. Afterashortdistancethemasonrygaveplacetosolidrock,thoughthetunnelkeptthesameproportionsandpresentedthesameaspectofcarvedregularity.
