Therewassomethingabnormalaboutthatwholebusiness—thestrangethingswehadtriedsohardtolaytosomebody’smadness—thosefrightfulgraves—theamountandnatureofthemissingmaterial—Gedney —theunearthlytoughnessofthosearchaicmonstrosities,andthequeervitalfreaksthesculpturesnowshowedtheracetohave—DanforthandIhadseenagooddealinthelastfewhours,andwerepreparedtobelieveandkeepsilentaboutmanyappallingandincrediblesecretsofprimalnature.
