Butthreecertainlycameoutabouteighto’clockand,advancingslowlyandcautiously,madetheirwaythroughByfleetandPyrfordtowardsRipleyandWeybridge,andsocameinsightoftheexpectantbatteriesagainstthesettingsun. TheseMartiansdidnotadvanceinabody,butinaline,eachperhapsamileandahalffromhisnearestfellow. Theycommunicatedwithoneanotherbymeansofsirenlikehowls,runningupanddownthescalefromonenotetoanother.

TheRipleygunners,unseasonedartilleryvolunteerswhooughtnevertohavebeenplacedinsuchaposition,firedonewild,premature,ineffectualvolley,andboltedonhorseandfootthroughthedesertedvillage, whiletheMartian,withoutusinghisHeat-Ray,walkedserenelyovertheirguns,steppedgingerlyamongthem,passedinfrontofthem,andsocameunexpectedlyuponthegunsinPainshillPark,whichhedestroyed.
TheSt.George’sHillmen,however,werebetterledorofabettermettle. Hiddenbyapinewoodastheywere,theyseemtohavebeenquiteunsuspectedbytheMartiannearesttothem. Theylaidtheirgunsasdeliberatelyasiftheyhadbeenonparade,andfiredataboutathousandyards’range.
