Itwasthedawnofthegreatpanic. London,whichhadgonetobedonSundaynightobliviousandinert,wasawakened,inthesmallhoursofMondaymorning,toavividsenseofdanger.
Unablefromhiswindowtolearnwhatwashappening,mybrotherwentdownandoutintothestreet,justastheskybetweentheparapetsofthehousesgrewpinkwiththeearlydawn. Asmybrotherhesitatedonthedoor-step,hesawanothernewsvenderapproaching,andgotapaperforthwith. Themanwasrunningawaywiththerest,andsellinghispapersforashillingeachasheran—agrotesqueminglingofprofitandpanic.
