Fartheralongwecameuponagroupofthreewomenandtwochildrenintheroad,busyclearingoutalabourer’scottage.Theyhadgotholdofalittlehandtruck,andwerepilingitupwithunclean-lookingbundlesandshabbyfurniture. Theywerealltooassiduouslyengagedtotalktousaswepassed.
ByByfleetstationweemergedfromthepinetrees,andfoundthecountrycalmandpeacefulunderthemorningsunlight. SeveralfarmwaggonsandcartsweremovingcreakilyalongtheroadtoAddlestone,andsuddenlythroughthegateofafieldwesaw,acrossastretchofflatmeadow,sixtwelve-poundersstandingneatlyatequaldistancespointingtowardsWoking. Thegunnersstoodbythegunswaiting,andtheammunitionwaggonswereatabusiness-likedistance. Themenstoodalmostasifunderinspection.
