WhenIlivedinLondonthehorrorwaswell-nighinsupportable.Icouldnotgetawayfrommen:theirvoicescamethroughwindows;lockeddoorswereflimsysafeguards.Iwouldgooutintothestreetstofightwithmydelusion,andprowlingwomenwouldmewafterme;furtive,cravingmenglancejealouslyatme;weary,paleworkersgocoughingbymewithtiredeyesandeagerpaces,likewoundeddeerdrippingblood;oldpeople,bentanddull,passmurmuringtothemselves;and,allunheeding,araggedtailofgibingchildren.
