Asthefirstshockofthechangeoflightpassed,Isawaboutmemoredistinctly.Thelittlesloth-likecreaturewasstandingandstaringatme.Myconductorhadvanished.Theplacewasanarrowpassagebetweenhighwallsoflava,acrackintheknottedrock,andoneithersideinterwovenheapsofsea-mat,palm-fans,andreedsleaningagainsttherockformedroughandimpenetrablydarkdens.Thewindingwayuptheravinebetweenthesewasscarcelythreeyardswide,andwasdisfiguredbylumpsofdecayingfruit-pulpandotherrefuse,whichaccountedforthedisagreeablestenchoftheplace.
Thelittlepinksloth-creaturewasstillblinkingatmewhenmyApe-manreappearedattheapertureofthenearestofthesedens,andbeckonedmein.Ashedidsoaslouchingmonsterwriggledoutofoneoftheplaces,furtherupthisstrangestreet,andstoodupinfeaturelesssilhouetteagainstthebrightgreenbeyond,staringatme.Ihesitated,havinghalfamindtoboltthewayIhadcome;andthen,determinedtogothroughwiththeadventure,Igrippedmynailedstickaboutthemiddleandcrawledintothelittleevil-smellinglean-toaftermyconductor.
