Mytroubletookthestrangestform.IcouldnotpersuademyselfthatthemenandwomenImetwerenotalsoanotherBeastPeople,animalshalfwroughtintotheoutwardimageofhumansouls,andthattheywouldpresentlybegintorevert,—toshowfirstthisbestialmarkandthenthat.ButIhaveconfidedmycasetoastrangelyableman,—amanwhohadknownMoreau,andseemedhalftocreditmystory;amentalspecialist,—andhehashelpedmemightily,thoughIdonotexpectthattheterrorofthatislandwilleveraltogetherleaveme.Atmosttimesitliesfarinthebackofmymind,ameredistantcloud,amemory,andafaintdistrust;buttherearetimeswhenthelittlecloudspreadsuntilitobscuresthewholesky.
