           Thematterwassoonarranged,astheturnkeyhadforetold.TheChanceryprisonerhadbeentherelongenoughtohavelosthisfriends,fortune,home,andhappiness,andtohaveacquiredtherightofhavingaroomtohimself.Ashelaboured,however,undertheinconvenienceofoftenwantingamorselofbread,heeagerlylistenedtoMr.Pickwick’sproposaltorenttheapartment,andreadilycovenantedandagreedtoyieldhimupthesoleandundisturbedpossessionthereof,inconsiderationoftheweeklypaymentoftwentyshillings;fromwhichfundhefurthermorecontractedtopayoutanypersonorpersonsthatmightbechummeduponit.

           Astheystruckthebargain,Mr.Pickwicksurveyedhimwithapainfulinterest.Hewasatall,gaunt,cadaverousman,inanoldgreatcoatandslippers,withsunkencheeks,andarestless,eagereye.Hislipswerebloodless,andhisbonessharpandthin.Godhelphim!theironteethofconfinementandprivationhadbeenslowlyfilinghimdownfortwentyyears.
