           Downthelanetheywent,anddarkenoughitwas.Mr.Pickwickbroughtoutthelantern,onceortwice,astheygropedtheirwayalong,andthrewaverybrilliantlittletunneloflightbeforethem,aboutafootindiameter.Itwasveryprettytolookat,butseemedtohavetheeffectofrenderingsurroundingobjectsratherdarkerthanbefore.

           Atlengththeyarrivedatthelargestone.HereSamrecommendedhismasterandMr.Winkletoseatthemselves,whilehereconnoitred,andascertainedwhetherMarywasyetinwaiting.

           Afteranabsenceoffiveortenminutes,Samreturnedtosaythatthegatewasopened,andallquiet.Followinghimwithstealthytread,Mr.PickwickandMr.Winklesoonfoundthemselvesinthegarden.Hereeverybodysaid,‘Hush!’agoodmanytimes;andthatbeingdone,nooneseemedtohaveanyverydistinctapprehensionofwhatwastobedonenext.

           ‘IsMissAlleninthegardenyet,Mary?’inquiredMr.Winkle,muchagitated.
