Mr.Wellertouchedhishat,asanearnestofhisobedience,andwithdrewtomakeallneedfulpreparationsfortheexpedition.
Thecoachwaspunctualtothetimeappointed;andMr.Weller,afterdulyinstallingMr.PickwickandMr.Winkleinside,tookhisseatontheboxbythedriver.Theyalighted,ashadbeenagreedon,aboutaquarterofamilefromtheplaceofrendezvous,anddesiringthecoachmantoawaittheirreturn,proceededtheremainingdistanceonfoot.
ItwasatthisstageoftheundertakingthatMr.Pickwick,withmanysmilesandvariousotherindicationsofgreatself-satisfaction,producedfromoneofhiscoatpocketsadarklantern,withwhichhehadspeciallyprovidedhimselffortheoccasion,andthegreatmechanicalbeautyofwhichheproceededtoexplaintoMr.Winkle,astheywalkedalong,tothenosmallsurpriseofthefewstragglerstheymet.
