Universalastonishmentfelluponthehearers.Eachgentlemanlookedinhisneighbour’sface,andthentransferredhisglancetotheupstandingcoachman.
‘Youmaywellbesapparised,gentlemen,’saidthecoachman.‘Iwillnotwenchuretostatethereasonsofthisirrepairabellosstotheservice,butIwillbegMr.Whifferstostatethemhimself,fortheimprovementandimitationofhisadmiringfriends.’
Thesuggestionbeingloudlyapprovedof,Mr.Whiffersexplained.Hesaidhecertainlycouldhavewishedtohavecontinuedtoholdtheappointmenthehadjustresigned.Theuniformwasextremelyrichandexpensive,thefemalesofthefamilywasmostagreeable,andthedutiesofthesituationwasnot,hewasboundtosay,tooheavy;theprincipalservicethatwasrequiredofhim,being,thatheshouldlookoutofthehallwindowasmuchaspossible,incompanywithanothergentleman,whohadalsoresigned.
