           Bythistimetheyhadreachedasmallgreengrocer’sshop,whichMr.JohnSmaukerentered,followedbySam,who,themomenthegotbehindhim,relapsedintoaseriesoftheverybroadestandmostunmitigatedgrins,andmanifestedotherdemonstrationsofbeinginahighlyenviablestateofinwardmerriment.

           Crossingthegreengrocer’sshop,andputtingtheirhatsonthestairsinthelittlepassagebehindit,theywalkedintoasmallparlour;andherethefullsplendourofthesceneburstuponMr.Weller’sview.

           Acoupleoftableswereputtogetherinthemiddleoftheparlour,coveredwiththreeorfourclothsofdifferentagesanddatesofwashing,arrangedtolookasmuchlikeoneasthecircumstancesofthecasewouldallow.
